Rock the Farm 2010 - What's it all about?

Rock the Farm 2010 is an event created specifically for you - young people, aged 18 - 40, who are dedicated to staking out a future in the agricultural industry. As the prospective leaders of this rockin' profession, you have the ability to create powerful changes that can break the mold and ultimately alter the face of this industry as we know it.

But hey, who says you can't have fun doing it? The Future Agriculture Business Builders (FABB) is an organization dedicated to empowering young people involved in agriculture to develop their potential for leadership and business success. Rock the Farm builds on the philosophy of social learning with hands on activities and practical sessions.

One thing's for sure - this isn't your parents conference!! For FABB, fun is the name of the game and with Rock the Farm, it's not just a hope but an expectation! We have taken pride in creating a program that will allow our attendees a forum to meet with people their own age who share the same interests and goals. Learning doesn't have to be a yawn fest!!

Derek Selinger – All Business is Show Business (Keynote)

Rob Saik – The Winds of Change (Keynote)

Agriculture, like sailing is constantly buffeted by “The Winds of Change”. The degree to which you can manage change really comes down to how well you read the wind, how well you have set your sails and how well you have trained your crew.

Drawing on his entrepreneurial and sailing experience as well as his 17 years of enrollment in Strategic Coach (a coaching program for entrepreneurs), Rob will talk about ideas and tools you use to adjust your sails as you encounter obstacles and trials.

Rob will be introducing some tools for managing change and there will be some time for individual and group exercises. The goal would be for you to walk away with some practical insights as how you can better manage your individual and business life.

 

Suzanne Gibson – Dreaming Big: Making Magic Happen in Your Community (Keynote)

Anyone who has created a new and inspiring program, service or initiative that enhances the quality of life for others, will almost always say, “It started with a dream.” Being able to dream big is an important part of manifesting community solutions and it is also great fun.

Join social innovator and entrepreneur, Suzanne Gibson to explore the power of dreaming big and how a powerful vision feeds into the creative process. Through story telling and examples of success, Suzanne will provide ideas to help you achieve your dreams for your society and community.

You will leave this session inspired and ready to embark on your next great dream with your supporters and community members – armed with lots of practical tips, approaches and solutions to help the magic unfold.


Rob Saik – The Digital Farm (FABB Session – 45-60 mins)

“The Digital Farm” focuses on the convergence of technology and agriculture. Rob will look at the how farmers can cerate a “digital shadow” of their operation and why this is important. He will show examples of how this is being done today as we look into the future to see where the digital farm is headed. He will also touch on social networking and discuss how Web 2.0 can contribute to agriculture and your farm.

Robert D. Saik, P.AG., C.A.C.

Robert Saik, CEO of the Agri-Trend Group of Companies, is a Professional Agrologist and a Certified Agricultural Consultant. As founder of The Agri-Trend Group, Robert has been involved in the department of many new business processes and concepts. He also serves as Chair of The Red Deer Chamber of Commerce Policy Committee as well as Alberta Director of The Canadian Consulting Agrologists Association. An entrepreneur, Robert also serves as Director on several other businesses. He is passionate about agriculture and business growth opportunities in the Ag sector.



Steve Stubblejumpski

Steve, an old Ukrainian farmer, is married to Stella and lives on a “mixed-up” farm near Doublebumps. As an entertainer, Steve has a great way of getting a message across through the use of humor. Steve can entertain a group of 50 up to crowds of 1200.

Steve has entertained hundreds of audiences since 1986 throughout Canada and the United States. His varied background lets him “think” he can fit into most situations and that is where the fun begins. Sometimes, he can get a little confused and recently has been in trouble with the government for expecting a refund on his GST. He still thinks it stands for “Give Steve Tax”. He relates particularly well to rural people or audiences with a rural background.



Suzanne Gibson

Suzanne Gibson has been “awakening the potential” of Canadian non-profit organizations for over 20 years. As a gifted consultant with a personal commitment to the creation of a better world, she:

 

Inspires new and established organizations to “dream big” and unite around an idea, strategy or plan to turn those dreams into reality

 

Applies her entrepreneurial flair to help organizations start up innovative new ventures that make the most of new trends and opportunities

Suzanne has worked with grassroots, community, provincial, national and international organizations in many sectors, including poverty, community services, recreation, culture, education, the environment, health, children’s and youth programming, and women’s issues.

She is an instructor at York University’s Schulich School of Business in the Non-profit Management and Leadership Program for executive education. She has also taken a

leadership role on seven volunteer boards and trains and speaks nation-wide on organizational capacity building, fund development, leadership building, social innovation and other issues of importance to the non-profit sector.



Derek Selinger

A speaking career that started over half a lifetime ago for Derek Selinger has taught him how to become a master storyteller. For years he has held the captive attention of thousands of junior and senior high audiences. There is no better training ground to test your ability to hold a crowd. Derek has had them rolling in the aisle with laughter and has left them in such stunned silences that you could literally hear a pin drop.

Derek's career has progressed with his opportunities in the industry, and so has his speaking. His message as well as the audience of this master storyteller is changing. The addition of Derek's personal experiences as a CEO, writer, and artistic director have given him many hard fought lessons to draw from.

Derek's fresh approach to the fundamentals of corporate training such as teamwork, excellence, focus, purpose and work/life balance are a rare treat for teams that want to be captivated, entertained, and have their perspectives challenged or changed for life!

Geoff Hoar – Outstanding Young Farmer

Geoff Hoar operates San Emideo Ranch Corp in Innisfail, AB, a horse training facility operated out of one of Alberta’s largest outdoor riding arenas. Geoff trains working cow horses, cutting horses, roping horses and ranch horses.  He also breaks colts and trains jumping horses.

Geoff graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in Agriculture.  In 2003, he built an indoor arena, barn and a complete training facility on an undeveloped quarter. Environmental stewardship is important to Geoff and he has planted over 1000 trees in a shelterbelt. The wood shavings that are used as horse bedding are recycled into cattle bedding and then composted before being applied to the land. The run-off water from his training facility is collected in a holding pond that can be used for fire suppression.

Geoff has served as President of the Central Alberta Cutting Horse Club and director of the Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association. He has won a Canadian Supreme Championship and a World Appaloosa Championship.

Geoff was selected according to the progress made in his agricultural career, maximum utilization of soil, water and energy conservation practices, crop and livestock production history, financial and management practices and his contribution to the well-being of the community, province and nation.



Judy Manning – Staff Alberta Business Family Institute

Gary Pike

 

Mr. Gary Pike, president and CEO of Pike Management Group (PMG), is a global farm consultant. He is responsible for advancements in the field of identity preservation and tracing systems. For over 15 years, Mr. Pike has advised farmers, compiled and consulted data on various agricultural topics. He has been active with the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association, the Canadian Wheat Board Advisory Committee and the Alberta Conservation Tillage Society. Mr. Pike is also the developer of an agri-business plan software. He has given hundreds of presentations throughout Canada, the United States and Australia.

Mark Anielski - Author

 

Mark Anielski is the author of the best-selling, award-winning book The Economics of Happiness: Building Genuine Wealth, which was published in June 2007 by New Society Publishers. Mark is a well-being economist, entrepreneur, professor and president of his family-owned corporation, Anielski Management Inc. which specializes in measuring the sustainable well-being of communities and nations. He has pioneered natural capital accounting in Canada and alternative measures of economic progress, including the US Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) and the Alberta GPI. For 14 years he served as senior economic policy advisor to the Alberta Government. He has served as an senior economic advisor to China  in their efforts to “green” their economic or GDP accounts. Mark is also a professor of corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship at the School of Business, University of Alberta and is a founding faculty member of the Bainbridge Graduate Institute (the first MBA program in sustainable business) located near Seattle. Mark is the past-President of the Canadian Society for Ecological Economics, an associate with the International Institute for Sustainable Development and a Senior Fellow with the Oakland-based economic think-tank Redefining Progress. He lives in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada with his family.
