FABB Presents: the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum Best Management Practices Workshop Series
February 5th and 6th, 2012
Who can attend? Farmers under 40
What is the series about?
The long-term success of a farm business hinges on the ability of the management
team to apply solid business principles. This course will teach you about those principles and how to apply them effectively.
Nine Best Management Practices
Research into the business management skills employed by leading farm communities in
Canada, the United States and Mexico have identified nine Best Management Practices
(BMPs) commonly used by successful farm management teams. Exploring BMP concepts
allows members of the management team to benchmark their business management skills
against those of leading North and Central American operators. Benchmarking will assist
in identifying management team strengths that can be leveraged, and weaknesses that
can be addressed over time.
The Workshop
Participants in the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum workshop series will explore the BMP
concepts in an open discussion forum, allowing them to share their own experiences in
the management area. Participants will learn from the experiences and opinions of their
peers.
In addition to general exploration of the BMP concepts, participants will be asked to use
the concepts in a thorough and honest assessment of their own operations. Participants
will be asked to share the results of their internal farm review with the workshop group.
Participants will be asked to develop and share:
1. A 10-year farm vision.
2. A comprehensive SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats)
analysis for the farm.
3. A 10-year, 5-year and 1-year list of actions that will guide management decisions in
order to achieve the 10-year farm vision.
